Gastronomy operators at SES shopping centers across Austria were restricted to take-away and delivery services for six months as a result of the pandemic, but as of Wednesday, 19 May, all eateries have been permitted to re-open. More than 100 SES shopping center-based restaurants and cafés are now allowed to serve food and beverages on-site again, both inside and on outdoor terraces. In addition, retailers have also been authorized to return to their regular, pre-coronavirus opening hours of up to 72 hours per week.

From a quick cup of coffee to upscale cuisine of the highest standard: A diverse and high-quality gastronomy offer is a core element of the shop mix at all SES shopping centers. Austrian gastronomy operators were required to keep their establishments closed since November of last year. Since Wednesday, 19 May, gastronomy operators at SES centers have been authorized to reopen and offer full service. Entry to all gastronomy establishments is contingent upon proof of vaccination, proof of testing, or proof of recovery. Verification of such proof will be conducted by each gastronomy operator.

Return to Regular Opening Hours at All SES Centers
Since Wednesday, 19 May, retailers have also been permitted to return to their regular opening hours. As a result, all SES shopping centers will once again be open for up to 72 hours – as was the case prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus – in some cases, until 9:00 PM, depending on the location. Gastronomy operators are now allowed to stay open until 10:00 PM. “The extension of the opening hours will even out peak footfall periods within our malls and is an important step towards a return to normality,” said Christoph Andexlinger, Chief Operations Officer at SES Spar European Shopping Centers.

“We are pleased that since Wednesday (19 May), in addition to retail and service providers, gastronomy establishments have returned to full operation. Many of our gastronomy operators also feature outdoor seating areas, which is clearly advantageous. A return to our “normal” opening hours for our customers has also been in effect since that day,” says SES Managing Director Andexlinger.

Safe Operation Due to Testing Facilities
One of the prerequisites for entry to the gastronomy establishments is a negative COVID-19 test. Free rapid antigen testing facilities are available at nearly all of the 17 Austrian SES shopping centers thanks to agreements that have been entered into with pharmacies. Appointments for tests can be made via oesterreich-testet.at and apotheken.oesterreich-testet.at; tests can also be administered spontaneously, without an appointment.

Appeal to Politicians: Eliminate the 20-square-meter Rule
As numerous studies have shown, no cluster formations are known to have originated from the retail sector. SES is in favor of the immediate elimination of the 20-square-meter rule in order to prevent unnecessary queuing.

SES rapidly implemented communicative and innovative technical measures in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed for the safe operation of its centers. Overall, SES retail partners generated sales revenues in the amount of EUR 2.45 bn at SES shopping centers in 2020. SES also offers its know-how in the areas of project development, construction management, leasing of shop space, as well as center and facility management to external owners of shopping malls right from the outset.
