After a four-year break due to the pandemic, on Monday, May 15 the International Design and Development Awards were presented in Milan. Europe’s largest retail property association, the European Council of Shopping Places (ECSP), presents the prizes in recognition of particularly outstanding projects in the retail property sector. This year the ALEJA Ljubljana shopping center was voted Europe’s best shopping center in its category. Following on from the 2021 Global RLI Award, this is the second internationally important award for ALEJA - the latest mall created by Austrian-based developer and operator SES Spar European Shopping Centers (SES).

ALEJA Ljubljana won through over the other finalists from Germany and Serbia in the "New centers between 15,000 to 45,000 square meters" category. Ljubljana's most modern shopping destination stood out with its multifunctional, sustainable layout, winning the jury over with its innovative use of the roof-top for sports, leisure, and recreational facilities. In the panel’s opinion, ALEJA is an outstanding example of a modern shopping center, with a pump track circuit in front of the building as well as the mix of retail and a great food and beverage offer.

Marcus Wild, SPAR Board Member and Chair of the SES Supervisory Board
"Congratulations to our team on receiving this award. SES has been recognized as a developer of remarkable, popular shopping centers for decades. It is great to know that we have once again succeeded in adding a European championship format to our selective chain.”

Christoph Andexlinger, CEO, SES Spar European Shopping Centers
"This award is extraordinary in terms of its significance – it is the major prize awarded by the industry across Europe. This naturally makes us particularly happy," explains SES CEO Christoph Andexlinger enthusiastically. "A big thank you to everyone who has played a part in this success, which is evident from the excellent footfall on a daily basis!"

Toni Pugelj, SES Country Manager Slovenia
"We are thrilled at this win. A big thank you to the panel for singling us out for this award," adds delighted ALEJA Center Manager Toni Pugelj, who jointly managed the project on-site from the approval phase onwards.

New benchmark for Slovenia’s shopping center industry
The high-quality, unique external façade is a particularly impressive feature of the ALEJA Center in Ljubljana, which was completed in May 2020. The same quality continues in the spacious, attractive architecture of the interior, which comprises 32,000 square meters overall. The shopping mall showcases its multifunctionality with over 80 shops, first-class gastronomy, various service providers and ALEJA SKY - a 6,200 m² roof-top sport and recreational facility. There is also a pump track circuit in front of the building.

Design and Development Awards – a driver of industry quality since 1977
The European Design and Development Awards have been presented annually since 1977 to Europe’s most outstanding new-build and refurbished shopping centers, with the exception of the pandemic period from 2020 to 2022. The prize is awarded by the European Council of Shopping Places (ECSP), formerly known as the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), and the awards are the most prestigious in the European retail property sector.

SES Malls – already a multi-award winner in international design and development
SES has already received several international awards for its malls, the most recent recipient being ALEJA with the coveted Global RLI Award in 2021. As far back as 2007, Salzburg's EUROPARK received firstly the ICSC European award, then the International Design and Development Award within a matter of months. In 2009 ATRIO Villach followed with the award for the world's most sustainable mall. In 2017 EUROPARK Salzburg once again received the ICSC's European Design and Development Award, and in the same year the ICSC Regeneration Award 2017 went to WEBERZEILE Ried.

ECSP: Europe’s largest retail property association
The Brussels-based European Council of Shopping Places (ECSP) was founded in October 2020 to succeed the former International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), and as an association represents the European retail property sector. The association aims to give a voice to all the companies creating destinations for retail, gastronomy and services, and safeguard their operations in the long term.
