Since 2017, Q19 has been the only shopping center in Vienna to be certified by OekoBusiness Wien with regard to sustainability, and it has successfully reduced its ecological footprint through a variety of measures. SES Spar European Shopping Centers, the operator, has recently invested in making the operation of the center even more resource-efficient: 1,200 square meters of the glass roof of Q19 EINKAUFSQUARTIER DÖBLING have been completely overhauled. The newly applied special glazing will result in further energy consumption reduction in the future.

Since its opening in 2005, solar protection and a special coating applied to the roof glazing in Q19 had helped to keep energy consumption for air conditioning low. By overhauling the glass roof at Q19, SES has further invested in the sustainable future of the center. “Our goal is to reduce the carbon footprint by conserving resources in the long term, thereby ultimately reducing the center's operating costs,” says Center Manager Gernot Jung. In total, more than 1,200 square meters of glass has been replaced. That will ensure significantly higher thermal insulation in summer as well as in winter.

Improved Energy Balance
The new glazing on the Q19 roof will generate annual energy savings of up to 35 percent as a result of the thermal insulation. In the summer, as much as 55 percent of the energy required for cooling can be reduced, as the incoming heat will be filtered through the new glass. In the winter, the special properties of the glass will yield a 15 percent reduction in transmission heat loss. As a result, the already high quality of stay will be further enhanced for customers.

Clear SES Shopping Center Energy Policy
SES shopping centers take “green building” into account in a number of ways – starting with sustainable center planning, followed by the use of innovative technology, and culminating in the use of renewable energies.

“Environmental protection is an integral part of the operational management of our shopping centers. Environmental management leads to economic prosperity and ensures that our shopping centers are both fit for the future as well as successful,” says SES COO Christoph Andexlinger.

District Leader Daniel Resch: “Willingness to Innovate and Invest in Sustainability”
District Leader Daniel Resch is pleased by the Döbling-based Shopping Center's willingness to innovate. “During times of climate change, in particular, it is especially important that the companies located within our district invest in energy conservation and, thus, in sustainability,” says Resch.

Q19 – Sustainable Construction and Operation from the Very Start
Ever since its opening in 2005, Q19 has been regarded as exemplary in terms of sustainability, for which it received the “ICSC ReSource Award” from the international shopping center association in 2008.

The measures taken at Q19 in an effort to protect the environment are manifold. For example, the heat supply is ensured all year round by means of district heating. The cooling load is managed via roof-mounted cold water storage tanks. Night air, for example, is used as needed to cool the shopping mall outside opening hours (free cooling). To further increase energy efficiency, the two sprinkler basins (250 cubic meters of water each) are cooled to eight degrees by a cooling unit at night and are used to cool the mall during the day. All ventilation systems feature technical equipment for heat recovery.

In recent years, the facility management and sustainability experts at SES have worked together with the center management of Q19 and the consultants of municipal department MA22 to develop further measures aimed at energy, resource, and waste reduction, which are implemented on a consistent basis.
