The ALEJA shopping center in Ljubljana has made it to the finals of the coveted ECSP Design and Development Awards 2023. The finalists were announced on Thursday, 1 December 2022 at the MAPIC retail property trade fair in Cannes. The award will be presented by the European Council of Shopping Places, Europe's largest retail property association, in spring 2023. The most recent center owned by developer and operator SES Spar European Shopping Centers was shortlisted as one of the three best shopping centers in the “New Center Developments over 15,000 to 45,000 Square Meters” category, alongside centers located in Germany and Serbia.

The ALEJA center in Ljubljana, which was completed in May 2020, features a unique architectural design, a modern concept, as well as an exceptional shopping and leisure offer across a 32,000-square-meter area. The shopping center is characterized by its mixed-use nature: more than 80 stores, first-class gastronomy, and a 6,200-square-meter sports and recreation zone on the roof – ALEJA SKY. A pump track circuit is also available for use in front of the building.

As a result, ALEJA, in its function as a district center, has set new standards for retail properties – both in the Slovenian capital and beyond. Its combination of retail, gastronomy, and leisure activities is in line with the latest international trends. The dragon, the heraldic symbol of the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, was the inspiration behind the impressive exterior facade.

“The fact that ALEJA, our newest shopping center, has made it to the finals of an international award is extremely gratifying. We are eagerly looking forward to the presentation of the awards in spring 2023. We regard this nomination as recognition of our passion for developing vibrant shopping destinations of the highest customer relevance,” says Christoph Andexlinger, Chief Operations Officer at SES.

ECSP Design and Development Award
Since 1977, the European Design and Development Awards have been presented each year to the most outstanding new shopping center developments and refurbishments in Europe. The prizes are awarded by the European Council of Shopping Places (ECSP), formerly known as the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). The awards are regarded as the most prestigious in the field of European retail property. The ECSP Awards publicly recognize significant European projects in which the shopping experience plays a pivotal role.

SES Has Won Multiple International Awards
Many of SES’s 30 shopping centers have already received multiple awards; most recently, the prestigious Global RLI Award was presented to ALEJA in 2021. In 2017, WEBERZEILE Ried won the “ICSC Regeneration Award 2017”. The internationally recognized awards categories range from development and marketing to architecture and sustainability. EUROPARK Salzburg was named the “World’s Best Shopping Center” by the ICSC in 2007 and received the ICSC European Shopping Center Award in 2017. In 2009, ATRIO Villach received the ICSC Award for the “Most Sustainable Shopping Center”.

ECSP: Europe’s Largest Retail Property Association
The European Council of Shopping Places (ECSP), based in Brussels, was founded in October 2020 as the successor organization to the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and represents the European retail property sector in the form of an association. The objective of the association is to give a voice to those companies that create, develop, build, operate, maintain, or finance places for retail, gastronomy, and services.
