The awards bestowed by the ICSC, the International Council of Shopping Centers, are the most prestigious in the industry. In the year of SES’s 10-year jubilee, there are two reasons for jubilation: First, EUROPARK Salzburg again emerged as a clear winner in the category “Established Shopping Center” in 2017. Second, WEBERZEILE Ried, newly opened in 2015, won the “Regeneration Award” together with the city of Ried im Innkreis. The ICSC established that award to recognize centers that have opened in the last two years and are pioneers in city center beautification. For SES CEO Marcus Wild, who received the awards at the ICSC Conference in Warsaw (Poland), the projects’ urbanity has been a success story for many years: “95% of SES centers are located in cities. We are very pleased that EUROPARK and WEBERZEILE have received these distinguished awards. Both do a lot for their hometowns and regions.”
The ICSC is headquartered in New York City and has more than 70,000 members made up of community representatives, architects, shopping center developers and operators, and retailers in more than 100 countries. The ICSC Awards are the only industry prizes that evaluate a center as a whole, from a customer perspective as well as from a social point of view; from the perspective of shoppers as well as that of investors. This reviews and assesses the totality of services a shopping center provides for customers, shoppers, municipalities, and investors according to social, economic, and environmental sustainability aspects.
SES CEO Wild: “The most important prize for EUROPARK since its opening”
Before the ICSC Award ceremony, an international jury of experts screened the nominees intensively. EUROPARK Salzburg was the only center to be awarded a prize in the “Established Shopping Center” category, bringing yet another prize home to Salzburg: the “ICSC European Shopping Center Award 2017” after 10 years of operation. EUROPARK won against international competition like Great Britain’s “Union Square Aberdeen” and Portugal’s “Almada Fórum.” Marcus Wild, CEO of SES Spar European Shopping Centers, is delighted: “This year’s ICSC European Shopping Center Award 2017 is one of the greatest prizes EUROPARK has ever received.” That’s because the “Established Shopping Center” category is the most demanding of all: The ICSC only nominates centers that already received an ICSC Award shortly after opening and have had a successful run in all facets for at least 10 years.
Jury statement: exceptional achievements for society
Opened in 1997 and expanded in 2005, EUROPARK Salzburg was chosen by the ICSC in 2007 as the most sustainable and best shopping center—initially in Europe, but then, a few months later, worldwide as well. In 2017, the high-profile expert jury explained granting the new award by highlighting EUROPARK’s exceptional service to society in its function as a meeting place and in the way in which it is perfectly integrated into the local and regional environment. EUROPARK acts as a “community hub.” In addition to its functional and architectural design, which has been thought through in detail, its services, leisure and cultural facilities, and its strong social commitment have made it a vital district center that is greatly appreciated by all demographics. In particular, the ICSC jury emphasized the activities surrounding the OVAL cultural hotspot, the company kindergarten, and the center’s excellent transport connections, including its own S-Bahn (commuter rail) station and extensive cycle paths.
“ICSC Regeneration Award 2017” for WEBERZEILE Ried (Upper Austria)
ICSC also honored SES a second time in Warsaw: Together with the city of Ried, SES was awarded the “ICSC Regeneration Award 2017” as the developer of WEBERZEILE in 2015. With its “Regeneration Award,” the ICSC recognizes centers that have opened anywhere in Europe within the last two years and that occupy a leading role in the revitalization of city a center in cooperation with a local municipality. “It is essential to us to aid the development of cities with our centers. The City of Ried is a partner with a vision—without it, WEBERZEILE would not be as successful as it is today, especially in such a short time,” emphasized Marcus Wild, CEO of SES Spar European Shopping Centers.
Wild: “WEBERZEILE attracts people from the entire region”
WEBERZEILILE is a special center for SES. It opened in the summer of 2015 in the center in the inner city of Ried, an Upper Austrian district capital, and today attracts an average of 8,000 visitors each day to the city. “WEBERZEILE attracts people from the entire region. Embedded in the heart of the historic city center, it is already contributing to the importance of the city and the whole region,” said SES CEO Wild. “We believe the region’s appeal, strengthened by our center, will really take off in the next three to four years.”
Jury statement: significant role in revitalizing the city core
The ICSC experts back up their choice of WEBERZEILE and the City of Ried for the “Regeneration Award 2017” by noting the very good cooperation between the center developer and the municipality from day one. The reasoning states that WEBERZEILE plays a significant role in the revitalization of the historic city center of Ried with its shop and segment mix, its children’s adventure world “Planet Lollipop,” and its elaborate traffic solution. At the same time, the quality level in the City of Ried has also risen. Retailers in the city center have modernized their stores or are planning to do so.
Ried’s Mayor Ortig: “WEBERZEILE increases purchasing power”
“The district capital is on the rise, the city center is a jewel,” enthused Mayor Albert Ortig. “Today, just two years after the opening, we know that WEBERZEILE has succeeded in expanding purchasing power far beyond the region.” The City of Ried has also made massive investments in the city center. One example is the redesign of Austria’s largest pedestrian-friendly traffic-calmed area. Ortig says of cooperation with WEBERZEILE: “This is exactly how cooperation has to work if you want to strengthen city centers. By the way, other mayors from Germany and Austria agree that Ried has already set a benchmark for optimal urban development.”
